Vacuuming is the single most effective way to extend the life of any rug. For loop-pile and flatweave rugs, use a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar, which can pull and fray fibres. For shaggy rugs, vacuum weekly on a high-pile setting and shake the rug outdoors monthly to dislodge deep grit.
Rotate your rug 180 degrees every three to six months. This distributes wear evenly, especially in rooms where people tend to walk the same path. In sunny south-facing rooms, rotation also prevents uneven fading.

Care by material
Different fibres need different approaches. Match your rug type to the right routine.
Wool and wool-blend rugs

Shaggy and deep-pile rugs
Use a wide-tooth comb or rug rake to lift matted fibres after vacuuming. Spot-clean with minimal water to avoid saturating the backing, which can cause mildew.
Coir and natural fibre mats
Shake vigorously and brush with a stiff broom. Do not soak coir mats — the fibres swell and rot. Replace outdoor coir mats every 12–18 months in wet climates.
Synthetic loop-pile rugs
These are the hardiest of the bunch. Most stains lift with diluted washing-up liquid. For stubborn marks, a weak bleach solution is safe on bleach-cleanable fibres — check the label first.
